But we prepare every file as if it may go to court, so if litigation is the right path or the only one left, we're ready. It depends on the type of matter, the responsiveness of the other side, and which court has jurisdiction. An uncontested divorce can resolve in a few months, and some disputes settle in weeks through negotiation. Contested parenting or property matters that proceed to trial in the Court of King's Bench can take twelve to twenty-four months or more. At the case review stage we'll give you a realistic timeline for your specific circumstances.

All three are tools for resolving a dispute. Negotiation is direct lawyer-to-lawyer discussion to reach an agreement. Mediation brings in a neutral third party to help facilitate that agreement, commonly used and often required in Alberta family matters. Litigation is the formal court process.
