Our Approach

How we approach every matter.

Edmonton Top Law represents individuals and businesses in family, civil, and commercial disputes across Alberta. We resolve matters efficiently through negotiation and mediation where appropriate, and litigate decisively where necessary.

We are selective in the matters we accept and approach every file with a clear strategy from the outset.

Strategic from day one

Every file begins with a clear strategy aligned to your objectives. We assess the legal landscape, identify leverage, and chart a structured path forward before action is taken.

Resolution-focused, litigation-ready

We push for resolution first through settlements, mediations, and structured negotiations, because efficient outcomes serve our clients. When the other side won't move, we proceed to litigation without losing momentum.

Direct lawyer involvement at every stage

Your matter is reviewed and handled by Majd Mouzaffar directly, from intake through resolution. No paralegal handoffs, no associate triage. The lawyer assessing your file is the lawyer arguing it.

Prepared for court when required

Appearances at all levels of court in Alberta, including the Alberta Court of Justice, the Court of King's Bench, and the Court of Appeal, with multiple reported decisions.

Common Questions

Questions clients often ask.

If yours isn't here, ask Majd directly during your case review. Confidential, no obligation.

Will my case have to go to court?

Not necessarily. We push for resolution through negotiation, mediation, or settlement whenever it serves the client, and many matters resolve before trial. But we prepare every file as if it may go to court, so if litigation is the right path or the only one left, we're ready. That courtroom readiness is also what makes us effective at the negotiation table.

How much will my matter cost, and how do you bill?

Litigation costs depend on the complexity of your matter, how the other side responds, and how far the file needs to go. We bill hourly with clear retainer arrangements, and we discuss expected scope and fees before any work begins. We don't take on files we can't serve well, which means fewer surprises and no padded bills.

What does the case review include?

A confidential, no-obligation conversation where Majd personally reviews your situation, asks the questions that matter, and gives you a clear sense of your legal position and the realistic paths forward. There is no pressure to retain. If your matter isn't a fit for the firm, we'll tell you that, and where appropriate point you toward a more suitable resource.

Will I work directly with Majd Mouzaffar?

Yes. Edmonton Top Law is a boutique practice by design. Every file is reviewed and handled by Majd directly, from your first inquiry through resolution. No paralegal handoffs, no junior triage. The lawyer assessing your file is the lawyer arguing it.

How long do litigation matters typically take in Alberta?

It depends on the type of matter, the responsiveness of the other side, and which court has jurisdiction. Some matters resolve in weeks through negotiation. Contested family or civil matters that proceed to trial in the Court of King's Bench can take twelve to twenty-four months or more. At the case review stage we'll give you a realistic timeline for your specific circumstances.

What's the difference between negotiation, mediation, and litigation?

All three are tools for resolving a dispute. Negotiation is direct lawyer-to-lawyer discussion to reach an agreement. Mediation brings in a neutral third party to help facilitate that agreement, commonly used and often required in Alberta family matters. Litigation is the formal court process. We use all three strategically and move between them depending on what serves your matter best.
